Netball

Tuggeranong Netball Association Inc.

Tuggeranong Netball Association (TNA) is located at Were Street, Calwell. The complex has eight hard courts and nine grass courts, many of which are used all day Saturdays during the Winter Competition. TNA aims to be successful at a representative level but is also committed to providing netball for all ages and skill levels and to developing the skills of its players, coaches and umpires. New players and teams are welcome; however TNA’s main aim is to provide an enjoyable team sport for as many as possible.

Winter Competition
This runs during the second and third terms of the school year and is played on Saturdays from mornings for junior players through to seniors in the afternoon. Grand finals, where played, are held in mid September.

Fun Net
Fun Net was successfully introduced in 2000 with over 100 participants. Fun Net is a development initiative introducing children aged 4-8 years to the basic motor skills of netball. Fun Net is supported by the TVRU&ASC and is also used as a development program for TNA’s young coaches.

Junior Division
This caters for players from Year 2 to Year 6. Years 2 and 3 players participate in a modified game called Netta. This division is non-competitive and is aimed at introducing players to the basic ball handling and movement skills required for netball and to the enjoyment of team sport.

Schools and clubs provide teams for the Years 4 to 6 competitions. These competitions are divided into grades, following grading games. The aim is to ensure teams play in the most even competition for their team’s skill level. Boys are encouraged to participate in the junior grades up to the age of 12.

Finals are not played in this division with winners in grades being decided on final ladder placings.

Intermediate Division
Players in Years 7 to 10 are eligible for this division and again schools are encouraged to organise teams for the competition. Clubs and individual teams also take part. This division is not graded by school year, but rather the whole division is graded to ensure that teams play in a grade that suits their skill level. TNA is aiming to increase the number of players in this grade in future years as this is when girls particularly seem to decrease their involvement in sport generally and lose fitness and other benefits gained from continuing involvement in sport.

Senior Division
All players eligible for intermediates and above may play in the senior competition. Teams are graded according to ability. In recent years it has been necessary to further divide some of the grades.

Twilight Competition
The twilight competition runs in term 4 of the school year, finishing in mid-December. The competition is aimed more at fun than competition, but some division games are still well contested. Mixed teams are encouraged to provide a more social atmosphere and numbers are steadily increasing. Competition is provided for juniors, intermediates and seniors as well as the mixed competition and is usually run over two playing nights.

Representative Teams
As part of TNA’s development programs, selections for Under 11 to 15 players are held late in the year for players to represent TNA at the ACT championships in May the next year. Players are provided with intensive coaching, attend carnivals and play in the ACT Championships. TNA has been very successful in many of the age groups in recent years.

Under 17, Under 19 and two Senior teams are also selected to represent TNA at the various competitions run by NetballACT. Again Tuggeranong has had success at these levels in recent years, with players being chosen to represent the ACT at national titles at underage and open levels.

Junior School HolidayProgram
TNA also runs a junior school holiday program for children in Years 2 to 6 during the June/July school holidays. The program is run for four half days and concentrates on development of skills, fun and participation. The program is also used for the development of TNA’s young coaches. Keep any eye out for advertisements about this program.

Coaches and Umpires
TNA conducts a number of courses for both coaches and umpires and advises of courses being run by NetballACT. Coaches and umpires wishing to improve skills may become involved in structured development programs. New coaches and umpires are always welcome.
