A Spotlight on Ian McPhee
With Anzac Day approaching, we want to take a moment to honour the service, sacrifice and resilience that defines this important day. Vikings is proud to commemorate those who have served and continue to serve our country.
One such member is Ian McPhee, a dedicated and accomplished individual whose career in the military and beyond has left a lasting impact.
Friendly, honest, and committed, Ian McPhee first joined Vikings as a member in 1998 when he moved to Canberra. His journey of service began long before that, when he enlisted in the Australian Army in 1979. "I remember it very well; it was the first Tuesday of November, Melbourne Cup Day," Ian recalls.
Inspired by his mother’s passion for cooking, Ian pursued a career as a chef. "My mum was a great cook," he fondly remembers. His dedication saw him rise through the ranks, becoming a Chef and Mess Manager. He later took on the role of an assessor and trainer, helping others gain their qualifications and certifications in the field.
Ian’s final role in the military was as a Regimental Police Officer, completing his training at Holsworthy Barracks. After 21 years of service, he transitioned into a career as a Public Servant, continuing his commitment to leadership and integrity in a different capacity.
Anzac Day holds a special place in Ian’s heart. "Having what we have now is because of what our forefathers sacrificed for us," he reflects. His time in the defence force shaped him into the person he is today, instilling values of integrity, honesty, and leadership.
A proud member of Vikings, Ian appreciates the club’s welcoming atmosphere. "It’s a friendly place to be," he says. Among his many career highlights, one stands out above the rest, having the honour of cooking for Princess Diana. "We got to greet her in our military uniforms. I was one of the first people to meet her as she walked through the doors," he recalls this with pride.
Ian McPhee’s journey is a testament to dedication, service, and community, and Vikings is honoured to have him as part of our family.
