A safe, inclusive space

We are committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment that prioritises the well-being of our community. Progress Update

The development application for the Poplars Club (DA.2023.0635) was lodged on 21 December 2024 and is currently listed as "in-progress" on the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) Development Tracker.

The proposed development was open for public notification during two periods: 6 March - 22 March 2024 and 3 April - 19 April 2024. A total of 45 submissions were received, addressing both positive and negative aspects of the project.

On 17 July 2024, the Southern Regional Planning Panel (SRPP) held a Public Briefing as part of the ‘State Significant Projects’ process. This session included eight submissions, mostly highlighting concerns, which have since been addressed through a Social Impact Assessment and some minor redesigns.

Referral Agencies have provided constructive feedback, which has been incorporated into the updated project documents. The revised plans and reports are now available for public review via the QPRC.

Next Steps: Council Decision Making

The Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council will review the revised plans and submit their assessment to the Southern Regional Planning Panel (SRPP), which is responsible for making the final decision. The SRPP will hold another Public Briefing before reaching a decision on the development application.

This ongoing support will continue with the Poplars Club, as we stay committed to supporting our local communities by offering welcoming spaces for people to come together and fostering the growth of grassroots participation in local sports.

Security personnel will be on hand to assist with safe transport options, while CCTV, external lighting, and regular staff patrols will monitor the premises to address any potential issues proactively.

The club has also removed access points facing residential areas, ensuring entry and exit are through the front doors only.

  • To limit noise during operating hours, the club will implement measures such as ceasing outdoor music by 10:00 pm and using soundproof barriers. Security will also encourage patrons to leave quietly after 9:00 pm, ensuring minimal disturbances.

  • While property values are not a direct planning consideration, the club is expected to positively contribute to the local economy and community by creating jobs, hosting events, and offering recreational activities.

  • The club will create local jobs, support sports teams, host community events, and contribute to local charities. It will also offer convenient dining, entertainment, and event spaces for residents, reducing the need for travel to distant venues.

  • No, the club will not sell alcohol for off-premises consumption. Strict policies are in place to ensure that alcohol is responsibly consumed on-site.

  • The club’s design and construction will prioritise local flora and fauna, preserving key vegetation and minimising habitat disruption. Biodiversity certifications have been secured, and landscaping plans include efforts to protect local wildlife habitats.

  • The development adheres to biodiversity certification standards, protecting local flora and fauna. Key vegetation will be preserved, and new landscaping will provide additional habitat for wildlife. An existing pond will also be integrated into the design for both visual appeal and environmental benefits.

  • The development will be completed in two stages to ensure sustainable growth. Stage 2 will begin once the club has established itself within the community, and demand justifies further expansion.
