Godfrey Brothers – Vikings Rugby

Vikings Group is excited to welcome Vikings Rugby back to Viking Park!

Round one of the John I Dent Cup starts this Saturday with Vikings Rugby taking on Gungahlin Eagles at home. We are looking forward to bringing you some great stories from Vikings Rugby this season – to kick off we introduce you to the Godfrey brothers – Jonty & Baden.

Both Lads have been working at Erindale Vikings in various roles including reception, bar, café and cellar. Jonty joined Vikings Rugby in early 2021 and was fortunate to be offered a role at Erindale Vikings around the same time.

“It doesn’t matter whether I’m on the field or working in the Club, Vikings is an amazing family. The culture here is really one of friendship and family. Everyone at Rugby is so welcoming – it’s a great culture to train in and play within. I’m really happy here.”

Baden, the younger of the brothers, joined Vikings this year from St Edmunds College and was also fortunate to gain a position at Erindale Vikings. “I came to Vikings for the elite pathway it provides Rugby in Canberra. Training has been positive, playing has been positive. It’s a tight group but at the same time you are welcomed in with open arms, and it’s real – our folks talk about how welcome they feel when they come out and support us”.

Jonty has been a mentor with the Modified Rugby Program (MRP) and is looking forward to being involved again this season. “MRP is so good for the participants. Whatever their physical or mental impairments, we work with them so they can enjoy Rugby and get out and have a run with the ball. Watching their siblings and parents on the sidelines cheer them on is pretty emotional. If you haven’t come down for a session you should – it will show you what Vikings Rugby is all about.”

Baden has been training with the Brumbies Senior Academy team this year and we all hope that he isn’t far away from getting a call up. “I want to be a Wallaby. No doubt. That’s the plan. But I’m conscious of the steps I need to take to get there and coming to Vikings was a huge step. Their coaching and support staff are talented and are great mentors themselves. I have a lot to learn from them and look forward to doing just that this season.”

Vikings Group is proud of the support we provide to Rugby and other sports in the Tuggeranong Valley – we encourage you to head down to Vikings Park and cheer on Jonty, Baden and their teammates whenever you get the chance this season.
