Funding for Viking Park

The Vikings Group is excited to announce that Liberal Candidate for Canberra, Zed Seselja, has secured funding from a Liberal Federal Government for upgrades to the grandstand and surrounds at Viking Park.

In an announcement this week Liberal Senator for Canberra, Zed Seselja, earmarked the funding to increase capacity for both the stadium and car parking within the current Viking Park concourse.

The stadium currently houses a 1,000 seat covered grandstand with ground capacity for 6,000. The concourse also hosts change rooms and officials rooms, canteen facilities with a training ground, baseball field and onsite parking for approximately 400 vehicles.  The ground also has state of the art lighting which meet Super Rugby and A League training and/or broadcast requirements.

The upgrade will see the stadium capacity increase with improved grandstand seating and amenities.  This will include the much needed inclusion of changeroom facilities for women within the ground to support the increased demand on the use of Vikings Park for women’s sport.

“It is important to the Vikings Group that we are in the position to offer facilities that reflect the quality of sport we can showcase here in Tuggeranong.  With teams such as Vikings Rugby, Brumbies Super W teams, the Matildas and Canberra United using these facilities, it’s only right that the stadium and surrounding grounds receive the attention they deserve.” said Anthony Hill, Vikings Group CEO.

We are grateful that the Federal Government supports the important role Vikings plays in the community and is happy to invest in this important piece of community infrastructure.  An upgrade to Viking Park is not going to be the solution for all professional sports in the ACT. It will form a vital part of the puzzle and an opportunity that meets current demands that will result in infrastructure that the community can utilise and enjoy for decades to come.

The Vikings Group was formed in 1979 to support Rugby Union and other sports in the Tuggeranong Valley.  Those who were involved then through to all of us here today are excited to see what we will become in the future not just to sport but to the whole community.

Vikings Group want to ensure that our Members and the broader community can access and celebrate local sports and events and attend a venue that is modern and provides an exciting level of atmosphere but is primarily welcoming to teams of all grades and playing abilities.

“This funding is the first step in many towards upgrading the facilities at Viking Park.  It’s certainly an exciting time for both sporting teams and sporting fans alike in the Tuggeranong Valley.”
